Half-Yearly Maths: What to Revise, Class by Class

Your child has a half-yearly maths paper coming up, the syllabus feels long, and the sensible question in every parent’s mind is simply: of all these chapters, which ones should we actually focus on?

This post answers that class by class, for Classes 6 to 10, in a way that works across CBSE, ICSE and State boards. It won’t tell you to skip anything — every topic your school has taught can appear. What it will do is help you spend your limited revision time on the topics that carry the most weight and that everything else depends on, so your child walks in feeling ready rather than scattered.

First, get the real syllabus from your child’s school

Before any list, one important step: the topics below are the usual first-half topics for each class, but the one that matters for your child is the syllabus their own school has set. Schools move at slightly different speeds and different boards order chapters differently.

So start with the syllabus sheet in the school diary, or a quick message to the class teacher. Tick which of the topics below your school has actually covered this term, and cross out the rest. Revising a chapter that isn’t even on the paper only steals time and adds stress.

The rule that decides what to revise first

Across every class, the same principle decides the order: revise the foundation topics first, because the newer chapters silently stand on them.

If a Class 9 child is shaky in polynomials, the real weak spot is often integers and basic algebra from earlier years. If a Class 7 child struggles with simple equations, the culprit is usually fractions and integers. So in each class below, the topics are grouped as foundations first (fix these before anything else) and then the current chapters that sit on top. Spend the early revision days low on the staircase; the higher steps then come far more easily.

Classes 6 and 7 — lock the number foundations

These are the years where a child’s whole future relationship with maths is quietly decided. The half-yearly is mostly about number sense, and getting it solid now saves years of struggle later.

Foundations to lock first:

  • Whole numbers and place value — reading, writing and ordering large numbers.
  • Integers — the number line, and the rules for adding and subtracting negatives (a classic quiet gap).
  • Fractions and decimals — comparing, adding, subtracting, and the meaning behind the operations, not just the steps.
  • Factors, multiples, HCF and LCM — these power almost everything that follows.

Current chapters that build on them:

  • Basic geometry — lines, angles, and simple shapes; and using instruments neatly.
  • Ratio and proportion, and an early taste of algebra (Class 7) — using letters for unknowns, and simple equations.
  • Data handling — reading and drawing simple bar graphs and tables.

Class 8 — the bridge year

Class 8 is the bridge between primary number work and senior-school algebra and geometry. The half-yearly here rewards a child who has genuinely understood, not memorised.

Foundations to lock first:

  • Rational numbers — operations and properties; this leans hard on Class 7 fractions and integers, so revise those if they’re shaky.
  • Exponents and powers — the laws, and reading numbers in standard form.
  • Squares, square roots, cubes and cube roots — patterns and quick methods.

Current chapters that build on them:

  • Linear equations in one variable — forming and solving equations, and simple word problems.
  • Algebraic expressions and identities — the identities are worth real practice; they return again and again in Classes 9 and 10.
  • Mensuration — area and perimeter of common shapes, moving toward surface area and volume.
  • Understanding quadrilaterals — properties and simple angle work.

Classes 9 and 10 — where the base is tested hard

By now the questions expect a child to combine skills, and weak foundations show up plainly. These are also the years where calm, steady revision matters most, because the syllabus is genuinely fuller.

Class 9 — foundations first:

  • Number systems — rational and irrational numbers, and operations on real numbers.
  • Polynomials — this stands directly on Class 8 algebraic identities; revise those alongside.
  • Linear equations in two variables — forming equations and plotting them.

Class 9 — building on them: coordinate geometry basics, lines and angles, triangles and their properties, and introductory statistics.

Class 10 — foundations first:

  • Real numbers — Euclid’s division and the fundamental theorem, HCF and LCM revisited.
  • Polynomials — zeroes and the relationship between zeroes and coefficients.
  • Pair of linear equations in two variables — the different solution methods.
  • Quadratic equations — factorisation, the formula, and the nature of roots; a high-weight topic worth extra practice.

Class 10 — building on them: arithmetic progressions, triangles and similarity, introduction to trigonometry, and coordinate geometry.

Priority for Classes 9 and 10: polynomials and equations are where most marks — and most exam stress — sit, and both rest on earlier algebra. A quick word on boards: CBSE, ICSE and State

The topic names are broadly similar across boards, but two things differ, and it’s worth knowing which applies to your child:

  • ICSE papers often go a little deeper and expect more written reasoning and neat step-by-step working. Practising presentation — showing every step clearly — genuinely helps here.
  • CBSE and most State boards tend to reward accuracy and method across a wide set of standard question types, so mixed practice across many topics pays off.

Whichever board your child is on, the foundation-first order above stays the same. When you tick the syllabus sheet from school, you’re automatically matching your child’s exact board and school pace.

Turn this list into practice

Knowing what to revise only helps once it becomes doing. Two simple moves:

1. Sort each topic into three baskets with your child — “I can do this”, “I’m getting there”, “I need another look” — using how it feels, not marks. Then start revising from the “need another look” pile among the foundation topics. 2. Practise with the answer key beside them. Frequently asked questions

Which maths topics are most important for the half-yearly exam?

The foundation topics that everything else stands on. For Classes 6–7 that’s integers, fractions and decimals; for Class 8, rational numbers and linear equations; for Classes 9–10, polynomials and equations (which rest on earlier algebra). Fixing these first makes the newer chapters much easier. Always check the exact chapters against your school’s syllabus sheet, as coverage varies by school and board.

Is the half-yearly maths syllabus the same for CBSE, ICSE and State boards?

The topics overlap a great deal, but the order of chapters and the depth differ. ICSE often expects more detailed written reasoning and neat step-by-step working; CBSE and most State boards reward accuracy across many standard question types. The safest guide is the syllabus your child’s own school has issued for the term — tick the topics it lists and revise those.

My child has understood the current chapters but still struggles. What’s missing?

Usually an earlier foundation topic. Maths is cumulative, so a Class 9 child struggling with polynomials often has a gap in Class 8 algebra, and a Class 7 child stuck on equations is often shaky on fractions or integers. Revise one class below the current topic; when the base is firm, the current chapter tends to click quickly.

How do we revise without knowing my child’s marks or comparing to classmates?

You don’t need marks at all. Sort each topic with your child into “I can do this”, “I’m getting there”, and “I need another look”, using how it feels. Then practise the weak foundation topics with an answer key beside them so your child self-checks. The only comparison worth making is your child today versus your child two weeks ago — that felt progress is what carries them calmly into the exam.
