The six strands — what those words on the report actually mean
Australian Curriculum maths (Version 9) is organised into six strands. They are the words that
turn up on your child’s school report, and most of them are rarely explained to parents.
Here they are in plain English.
Number
Place value, fractions, decimals, percentages, integers. How numbers work and how to calculate with them confidently.
Algebra
Patterns and rules first, then letters standing in for numbers, expressions and equations.
Measurement
Length, mass, capacity, time, angles, area, volume, rates — and choosing sensible units.
Space
Shape, symmetry, position and direction, coordinates, transformations, and later, proof. Often called geometry.
Statistics
Collecting data, choosing a display that tells the truth, and reading one that doesn’t.
Probability
Chance — from “likely or unlikely” in the early years to sample spaces and two-step experiments later.
A child can be strong in Number and quietly lost in Space or Statistics, and a
single overall mark hides exactly that. It is one of the reasons we look at the strands
separately from the first lesson.
What your child covers, year by year
Drawn from the Australian Curriculum (Version 9) content for each year level, so you can see
what is coming and what has already been assumed.
Years 3–4
Building the number system
- Number
- Place value into the thousands, then tenths and hundredths. Halves, quarters, thirds, fifths and eighths; equivalent fractions and mixed numerals. Multiplication facts to 10 × 10.
- Algebra
- Number patterns, and finding the unknown in a simple equation.
- Measurement
- Metric length, mass and capacity; telling time and duration with am/pm; naming angles as acute, obtuse or right.
- Space
- Line and rotational symmetry, grid references and directions, composite shapes.
- Statistics & Probability
- Collecting data and choosing a display; the language of chance, tested with repeated experiments.
Years 5–6
Fractions, decimals and percentages become one idea
- Number
- Adding and subtracting fractions using equivalence; decimals; percentages of a quantity; prime, composite and square numbers; integers appear in Year 6.
- Algebra
- Rules behind visually growing patterns; equations with brackets.
- Measurement
- Converting metric units, the area of a rectangle, timetables, angles on a line and at a point.
- Space
- All four quadrants of the Cartesian plane, transformations and tessellations, nets of objects.
- Statistics & Probability
- Comparing data sets, questioning statistical claims in the media, and probability on a 0–1 or 0–100% scale.
Years 7–8
Algebra arrives properly
- Number
- All four operations with integers and rational numbers; exponent laws; irrational numbers including π and square roots; recurring decimals.
- Algebra
- Variables and formulas, building and simplifying expressions, solving linear equations, graphing linear relations.
- Measurement
- Area of triangles and parallelograms, volume of prisms, circumference and area of a circle, rates, and Pythagoras’ theorem.
- Space
- Classifying triangles and quadrilaterals, congruence and similarity, transformations on the plane.
- Statistics & Probability
- Range, median and mode; stem-and-leaf plots; sampling versus census; sample spaces, complementary events, two-way tables and tree diagrams.
Years 9–10
Towards senior maths
- Number & Algebra
- Scientific notation and index laws; expanding and factorising, including binomials; quadratic and exponential relationships; simultaneous equations and inequalities in Year 10.
- Measurement
- Surface area and volume of composite objects; Pythagoras and right-angled trigonometry; measurement error; proportion and scaling.
- Space
- Similarity and scale factors, deductive proof, and networks.
- Statistics & Probability
- Histograms and box plots, comparing distributions, scatterplots and association, two-way tables, relative frequency and conditional probability.
The two places the curriculum asks for a real step up
You can see both of them in the structure of the curriculum itself, and they are where a
confident child most often starts to go quiet in maths.
- Years 4 to 6 — when numbers stop being whole. Fractions, decimals, percentages
and negatives all have to become one connected idea. A child who is still thinking of a
fraction as “a shape cut into pieces” can keep up for a while by memorising, and
then meets Year 7 with nothing underneath.
- Years 7 to 8 — when letters replace numbers. Algebra assumes fluent arithmetic
with integers and fractions. When it doesn’t come easily, the problem is usually not
algebra at all — it is a gap two or three years further back.
Finding which one it is takes a person watching your child work, not a test score. That is
what the first class is for.

Bring this term’s topic, a worksheet or a test that didn’t go well, and we work from there
— alongside filling whatever earlier gap turns up.

Understanding before speed.
A child who understands why a method works can rebuild it under pressure. A child who memorised it cannot.

At your after-school time.
Classes run in AEST/AEDT to suit your evening, not ours. We will show you sample slots when you enquire.
We don’t show children scores or ranks. Your child’s teacher keeps the
detailed picture and talks it through with you — children learn faster when the conversation is
about understanding rather than a mark.
NAPLAN sits inside the same curriculum
NAPLAN numeracy in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 assesses number and algebra, measurement and geometry,
and statistics and probability — the same strands above. So there is nothing separate to
cram: a child who understands the year’s maths is already prepared.
