What NAPLAN actually is (for parents)

NAPLAN (National Assessment Program — Literacy and Numeracy) is sat by every Australian student in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9, usually in March. Numeracy is one of its core strands — it checks how well children apply maths: number, patterns, measurement, money, fractions, data and reasoning.

Here's the calm truth: NAPLAN is not an exam to fear. It's a snapshot. The best preparation isn't cramming — it's a child who genuinely understands the maths. That's what we do, all year round.

How we help with NAPLAN numeracy

Year 3

Number and place value, patterns and counting, simple fractions, money and measurement, and early chance & data. We keep it playful and build number confidence.

Year 5

Number operations, estimation, factors and multiples, integers, fractions and decimals, and problem-solving patterns. This is where reasoning really starts to matter.

Year 7

Integers, percentages, fractions and decimals, ratio and rates, and area and measurement. We connect the topics so word problems stop being scary.

Year 9

Applying number (percentages, rates, financial maths), early algebra and indices, area and volume, and data and probability.

In every year, your child gets one teacher who knows them, explains each idea until it clicks, and practises the exact question styles NAPLAN uses — at a comfortable AEST/AEDT after-school time.
